It may be a bit early to plan for your 2012 fantasy football season, but here are some thoughts on how spending a little time before the 2012 fantasy football year arrives can help get you ready.
First up, please note that the schedules for the NFL seasons come out in April. If you want to draft a QB and a backup, please make sure that they do not have the same “bye week,” or week off. Otherwise, you could run into problems. Also, the NFL schedule can give you a little bit of a clue as to whether a particular team could have a tough or not-so-tough season. Pay attention to the schedule.
The second thing to do is to pay attention to injury reports, starting at the end of a previous season. Last year, if you had drafted Peyton Manning because you thought that he might recover from his neck surgery before the end of the year, you would have been out of luck, as he didn’t play one minute for the Indianapolis Colts in 2011. Anyhow, listen closely to injury reports when it concerns players you might be interested in.
After that, you could pay attention to what is happening in the NFL draft to prepare for the 2012 fantasy football season. Unlike MLB, where players who are drafted may not make it into the majors for at least five years, college players picked up in the NFL draft could theoretically start playing from the very first game of the season. So you should try to have a background of the top college football players, and think about who might be worth spending a draft pick on. Note: in most cases, you do not want to draft any rookies in the first round, because you neither know what their playing time will be, plus you have no idea how they actually will do in the NFL.
Then, you might want to start picking up 2012 fantasy football magazines on the newsstands, and reading web sites on the subject, to see who the fantasy football experts have ranked as the top players for the draft.
Next, you should start coming up with your own fantasy football cheat sheet, starting with a wish list of which players you would like to see on your team. A lot of fantasy football web pages and publications have their experts come up with their own cheat sheets. You can use one of theirs, or combine knowledge from a variety of sources to come up with your own cheat sheet to bring into the draft.
After doing so, check out a fantasy football mock draft by either reading about whom fantasy football experts drafted, and/or do one yourself. Not only will you get a lot of knowledge on the 2012 fantasy football season, but you will have a pretty good idea of the pace for a fantasy football draft, so you won’t be shocked when the clock is ticking. It will also help keep you from being nervous in the real draft.
Finally, draft day comes, and you can bring your cheat sheet to your 2012 fantasy football draft and get ready to roll. Good luck!
