Head-to-head fantasy baseball is one of the many fantasy baseball options out there. In some fantasy baseball leagues, you may play against say, nine other teams – the number of players in the league may vary, depending on how your league is run – and whoever has the most overall points, or best statistics, will win the league. Head-to-head fantasy baseball works a little differently. If it is a season-long league, each week, you could compete against a different opponent in the time frame. What that means is that it doesn’t matter how other people in the league do, and whether you have better statistics for that week than they do. What you need to do is beat the person you are up against in a head-to-head matchup for that week.
Some leagues may have different time frames, where you could face a different person each day in head-to-head matchups. The basic point is that you get credit if you beat just that person, as opposed to beating the entire league. How this could work in a baseball fantasy league that goes over an entire season is that the more wins you accumulate in head-to-head fantasy baseball, the more you could find yourself in the hunt for a fantasy baseball championship!
You need to have a little bit different strategy as far as head-to-head fantasy leagues with MLB. There are specific strategies and tips to help you win your league championship. One is to scour the waiver wire to find players that could help you compete better against a particular opponent, and to adjust your bench each week for players that could help you beat your head-to-head opponent.
Another is that you might want to skip drafting players who are injury risks. If you have a player who could miss much of the week due to injury, or who gets frequent benchings due to health issues, such a player will simply not play enough to help you have an advantage by using him, even if he does well when he actually does play.
Focusing on steals in a head-to-head fantasy baseball league may not be the way to go. That’s not to say that you should give up on winning the category, but if you pick somebody solely because he steals bases, it may backfire on you.
A winning strategy in head-to-head fantasy baseball is to have a balanced team. Having, say, great closers and starters but not so great hitters may help you in some way if it were a matter of winning categories against a variety of people in the leagues. Head-to-head baseball leagues basically require a balanced team, because you need to win a majority of categories against your opponent in order to beat him or her. So you want to make sure that you have a fighting chance at winning most or all of the categories, not just a few.
Head-to-head fantasy baseball requires some different strategies, but what you may discover is that it can be fun to go ahead a particular opponent head-to-head, with the trash talk and the direct competition. Enjoy your season!
